framebuffer programming

Hi all,
I'm hoping some of you have some experience with framebuffer programming. Basically I'm trying to get frame buffer to run. But try as I might I always get the following error

*) DirectFB/Core: Single Application Core. (2010-08-10 09:04)

(*) Direct/Memcpy: Using armasm_memcpy()

(*) Direct/Thread: Started 'VT Switcher' (-1) [CRITICAL OTHER/OTHER 0/0] <2093056>...

(*) Direct/Thread: Started 'VT Flusher' (-1) [DEFAULT OTHER/OTHER 0/0] <2093056>...

(*) DirectFB/FBDev: Found 'ep93xxfb' (ID 0) with frame buffer at 0xc7c00000, 3600k (MMIO 0x80030000, 128k)

(*) DirectFB/Graphics: Generic Software Rasterizer 0.6 (directfb.org)

(!) DirectFB/FBDev: No supported modes found in /etc/fb.modes and current mode not supported!

(!) DirectFB/FBDev: Current mode's pixelformat: rgba 5/11, 6/5, 5/0, 0/0 (16bit)

(!) DirectFB/Core/layers: Failed to initialize layer 0!

--> Initialization error!

(!) DirectFB/Core: Could not initialize 'layer_core' core!

--> Initialization error!

(#) DirectFBError [DirectFBCreate]: Initialization error!

I'm usure what the true error is here? Is it to do with the /etc/fb.modes ? I can see from fbset I have

/usr/bin # ffbsetbset bset

mode "640x480-61"

# D: 25.600 MHz, H: 32.000 kHz, V: 60.953 Hz

geometry 640 480 640 480 16

timings 39062 40 24 33 10 96 2

rgba 5/11,6/5,5/0,0/0

endmode

I can see from my fb.modes that this set up doesn't exist? The nearest is

mode "640x480-60"
# D: 25.175 MHz, H: 31.469 kHz, V: 59.94 Hz
geometry 640 480 640 480 8
timings 39722 48 16 33 10 96 2
endmode

So I cut and pasted

mode "640x480-61"

# D: 25.600 MHz, H: 32.000 kHz, V: 60.953 Hz

geometry 640 480 640 480 16

timings 39062 40 24 33 10 96 2

rgba 5/11,6/5,5/0,0/0

endmode

into fb.modes and tried to run again, no luck same error. I rebooted and still the same error.

How can it still say

(!) DirectFB/FBDev: No supported modes found in /etc/fb.modes and current mode not supported!

if I've posted the above into my fb.modes? Also is this the root of the

!) DirectFB/Core/layers: Failed to initialize layer 0!

--> Initialization error!

(!) DirectFB/Core: Could not initialize 'layer_core' core!

--> Initialization error!

(#) DirectFBError [DirectFBCreate]: Initialization error!

errors are am I looking at a red herring? I really stuck on this can anyone offer any advise? Thanks!
