File write

i have a process sending messages and theres another process with a message queue that receives these messages and keeps writing them. now when this sending and receiving is going on i open a new window, view the file's contents and close it and i find that the sending and receiving has stopped, thou i have not made any changes to the file. where am i going wrong? i need to keep writing to the file and at the same time i must be able to open and READ its contents and close it and open it to read the updated contents any number of times when the WRITE operation is going on, how do i do this?
