Emacs: Ctags, Cedet and other foo

I love emacs when i code (mostly python) in it. As i have a very little (or better say no knowledge) of elisp i just keep myself away from installing foreign scripts.

but now i feel the need to customize emacs for more like an IDE and i am not sure what are standard modules (or well written modules) for emacs.

I heard of ctags for vim. does that exist for emacs?
how about cedet. is it worth trying. i am just not sure right now would i install cedet or search for any simpler alternative.

please suggest what should i consider before installing any extension/scripts in my emacs. i just want to keep dirty scripts away.

Yes, see etags(1), and Emacs Manual: Tags.

CEDET comes with Emacs since version 23.2, I've been meaning to try it out for a while now...
