e-mail and pager notification

Hi,

I need to find an example program that does e-mail and pager notification. I mean that in the occurence of a certain event, an e-mail is sent to the concerned person or he will be paged on his pager a certain message. I don't really know how to do that. I found examples for windows, but I need it for linux.
