"DirectInput" for POSIX?

Greetings. I am slowly porting a little 3D engine game thing over to linux, and wanted to know if there was a good API for input, much like DirectInput for windows, but for linux. Video and sound are handeled by OpenGL and OpenAL respectively, but is there something for linux for input? I don't want to use anything like allegro or SDL however.

Out of curiosity why not use SDL?
