directing users to the proper page by login

I'm working on a website for a fantasy sports league. I want to have the team owners log in, and then find the team that they own and send them to that team's home page. Is this the kind of information that a web browser cookie would be used for?

i wouldn't use a cookie if this is supposed to be secure. if the owners only need to go and view the team, sure you could do that. but if it's to go and edit the team roster and what not, i don't think i would go that route as cookies are easily faked.

how are you authenticating the owners login? is it against a database? cause you could also use that to validate which team the owner has and then redirect him from their.

Depending on what environment you want to run your website in (Java, PHP, .NET, etc.) There are most likely pre-made websites that will meet your needs. For example, LinuxQuestions.org has the notion of users, administrators, moderators, etc. and its based on vbulletin software. There are lots of open source projects for whatever you like. You could just use the core authentication modules, or the whole site it's up to you really.
