The best advice is to look at the book, or "the bible" on the subject...

Linux Device Drivers, 3rd Edition - O'Reilly Publishers

http://www.amazon.com/Linux-Device-D...0711471&sr=8-1

Unless anyone else knows of a similar resource that is available free?

Avionics work, huh?

I consult, and I speak both Mil-Std 1553 and Arinc 429.
