Development Evironment Question

A newbie from the Windows world here (no groans pls). What evironment are there for Linux to development in. Is there a environment ppl use or just a text editor and then gcc it at the prompt. I run Gnome (KDE freezes on me so I can't use that... yet) and would like to use a graphical IDE.

Also to write code that would run on top of Gnome, what do I need to download. Is that Wine? Is there a site that would explain all the differences?

Thanks
Ralph

For Gnome there is Anjunta, you can use the KDE one KDevelop to make Gnome programs as well. People write Makefile's then use make to compile. Only if your doing very simple coding do you usually call gcc or g++ directly.
