Desktop effect on programs?

I am starting to program for Linux. I see that C++ IDE's use either QT libraries (Kdevelop, KDE) or GKT or Gnome libraries (Anjuta, Gnome). What effect does the Desktop environment have on the programs? What effect does the different libraries have on the program? Is it just a mater of personal choice?

It's mostly personal choice. Thay have similar options. The thing is that they're both very big and it'd be hard to know both well, so you'd rather need to decide to use one.

I would be difficult to choose with my limited (actually none) knowledge of the libraries. Are you aware of any particular strengths or weaknesses of any of the IDE/libraries

If you intend for your program to be used with KDE, use Qt. If Gnome or something else, use gtk. This is because Qt apps integrate with KDE well. If Gnome, then you'd want to integrate wiht it well. With other window managers, there's a reason why the bloated kde/gnome are not being used; for speed. You would want to use the faster gtk instead of the Qt with these, which take longer to load when KDE is not running.

Good input aaa, can you recommend any books? I'm primarily interested in database access, text file interaction, and other types of data file interaction. I have experience with M$ Visual C++ but a review from the begin would be good also. This may effect the IDE I deside to use.

I mean to say anything you prefer I have view the reviews here.
