creating a linux distro

lately ive been looking into the structures of mini linux distrobutions but im puzzled. Alot of them are just .img files or a set of a few small packages. So my question here is how exactly would someone go about making something like this? I assume you would need a small kernel with minimal support for what your distro is supporting (ppp, ip, fs.. and so on) and a shell and maybe like telnet or ipchains or whatever. But how do u go about creating something like this. how is the disk bootable? How do u get ur kernel to boot to ur shell on teh same cd? how how how :/ im puzzled if anyone can clue me in on any of this that would be cool. ok thank you

You might want to take a look at LFS (automated LFS, actually):

Especially the Implementations: section.
