configure Makefile to compile for multiple platforms

I'm attempting to compile the GNU coreutils for both ppc and x86 platforms. (to make a universal binary) I have tried to configure the Makefiles by hand, but have had no success. If somebody knows how to do this, your help would be greatly appreciated.
