How about this?
Code:
cat $(ls -v file*)
(Note that if ls is aliased there are several ways to bypass it.
Code:
cat $(/bin/ls -v file*)    #use the full path

cat $(\ls -v file*)    #escape it with a backslash

cat $("ls" -v file*)   #escape it with quotes
