checking a network

hey - how does one check if one network can be associated with while running on another.
for instance, if im associated with network 'a', how would you check to see if you can be associated with 'b' without having to lose connectivity to 'a'.

p.s - the only thng u know about the networks are the mac addresses.

thanks again.

Can you give a bit more information.

What do you mean by associated?

Do you mean see if you can contact any other hosts?

well, its for my wireless card. what im trying to do is to check if i can get an ip address from one network while im connected to another.
i have a list of access points i can connect to. and say, i am connected to one. what i want to try is to see if i can connect to another ap, while im connected to this one - wihtout dropping the connection im on.ordinarily we set the ssid, and try to get an ip addr using dhcp, but that requires the current connection to be dropped as it tries to get the new one.
so, is there a way to not drop the current connection while we check if the other connection is going to be good (in terms of being connected) or not.

mmm - I'm affraid I haven't used wireless properly myself. Perhaps you could use an alias? I'm not sure how well it would work but It may be worth a shot.

thanks for your time david_ross.

doesnt ip aliasing require one to know the network address and gateway settings?
if not, ill read up on it. (do let me know).
if yes, i dont know what the parameters of these access points are to set them up.

Aliases can use dhcp too. I'm not sure which distro this is on but redhat has a doc about creating aliases - see:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...nterfaces.html

I'll try to help where I can.
