challenging programming problems

k, so I was in a programming compition awhile back and just wondered what way anyone would
have gone about solving these problems from here

I and most teams only solved number 4 as you'll probably find out why, but I'd be quite interested
to see how anyone would have solved any of these, especially an actual solution to them.
and btw, you only had 5 hours to do these with 3 ppl in your group and 1 computer with redhat on it :D

ive just had a quick read of the preliminary problem and it looks quite straight forward, ive got a lecture in 10 minutes then christmas formal tonite so havnt got time to read the others but i'll try and have a look tomorrow. as tesl says www.topcoder.com is really good if its in your timezone.

yeah, I guess I should mention, don't bother looking at the prelimary, it was just there to make sure everybodys machine could compile fine, believe me, its not one of the real problems
