C vs. Your Favorite Application Language

Obviously different languages are good for different things. The GNU project still recommends development in C. What's your vote?

Where is Perl? PHP? Basic? Forth? Fortran?

MensaWater 08-24-2007 02:28 PM

or lithp...

Nylex 08-24-2007 02:31 PM

Or Prolog..

I thought I heard that they're re-writing the Linux kernel in Ada.

And that the GNU folks are working on an MSIL compiler so the whole thing'll run under .Net.

Perl: Never used it - probably should have put this in the poll though, sorry.
Basic: Didn't think this was in wide use.
Forth: Never heard of it.
Fortran: I was born in 1986.

Yeah. I forgot about Ada. And JOVIAL, of course.

Never heard of Visual Basic? Granted that it isn't more than passingly related to the original Basic, it still carries the name.

*shrug* I last programmed some fortran about 2 years ago. It is still in widespread use, mostly in labs I think. There is a GNU fortran compiler.

And as far as that goes, I was doing major Fortran work for many years before you were born, and was publishing magazine articles using it when you were still not potty trained. ;)

Omitting perl was a crime :}

The first program I wrote, when I was 11, was in VB. It popped up a window with an image of cheese and exclaimed "Cheese is good." Haven't touched it since then, though. Maybe that's why I haven't taken it too seriously as of late. Hm.

To me, BASIC and Visual Basic are two different languages. :)

My vote goes to C, though I am gradually finding Python to be a very good language as well.

That'th right I'm a thtealth pothter...

I think the person that created the word lisp was a sadist - imagine describing people with a word they themselves can't say.

No one mentioned Cobol yet.

I agree omitting perl was a big miss though I doubt I'd jail anyone for it.

Oh yeah... for example when you watch meteo bulletin on tv... there is a huge fortran code behind it.

The last standard is Fortran 2003 and a minor upgrade will be released in 2008... you will be 22! ;)

Anyway, why not script-fu?!? :)
