C / rendering through Xlib

Could somebody give me a quick outline please on how to draw to the
screen through xlib with a c software renderer? From what I saw
from the sparse tutorials covering this subject on the net, I
thought getting the window image through XGetImage, drawing to
it and then putting it to the appropriate window through XPutImage
would be the way to go - but the window always stays plain
black :-(

Thanks in advance

Well the links are interesting, but if the answer to my question is there,
I'm unable to find it because of the sheer mass of pages.

My question again, in a more programmatic form: What I want to do is

1. get some type of descriptor, containing base ptr, pitch, pixel format
of a memory area representing a graphical image (like DDSURFACEDESC
under DirectX, or SDL_surface under SDL) in X format

2. manipulate that image with C code using the given information of the
descriptor
(I've already got that code, just don't know how to use it through X)

3. (if necessary) do the appropriate step to put the new image to display.
