shell programming kicks ass, because you can do complex things with simple tools and with only a few lines of commands. Another thing is that compiling isn't needed, somethimes this can be usefull to generate a script with another script.
It can also be usefull to do some special tasks when you boot your pc or at login.
do some shell programming, you'll really feel the benefits of it...
imagine 5 different programs, who are specialized on a subtask. The programs work sequencially, one after the other. Instead of setting the same parameter every time in every program you can write a script, which sets the parameter for you. So you just change the input parameters of the first program, run the script an look at the output of the last program. If somethings goes wrong, the script allows you to write log files, reports, etc... to trace. So you can save a lot of time
