I wanted to know if anyone had read or used the Beggining Python Book by Hetland. I read a few positive reviews on amazon but wanted to know whether it was a good book. I don't have much money to spare and wanted to know whether this book would be wasting my hard earned or a valuable addition.
I think its a good book and worth your money. I bought a copy at the beginning of this year and have found it to be one of the best books for both novices and professionals.
Yeah Have been doing the tutorial from Allan Guald listed on that site, thats where I found the link to instant hacking which was by the author of Begining python, that web page was good so thats why I was looking at investing in the book.
Redazz how proficient were you when you started reading this book ?

I knew a bit about the basics of python from some lectures a few years back (based on the stuff on Alan Gaulds' site). At the mo, I think I've reached a stage where I am reasonably proficient with Python (not saying that I am an expert though) and its all from reading this book and using the python-tutor mailing list.

I have the Hetland book, but I must say I prefer 'Learning Python' from O'Reilley.
The O'Reilley book stands the test of time better, as it is more useful as a reference after you have learned the basics, and it goes much more in depth. However, the Hetland book is also cool because the last half is composed of 'projects' that actually get you writing useful/cool code. Both books have their good points, and few bad points.
