bash shell script problem


i know how to use <read> to get user input, but is there anyway that when user typing input, it wont show up in the screen?like typing password in login screen
another question, is it anyway to setup so that a normal user can become a superuser wthout typing the password?i tried to make a file the contain the passsword, then do:
cat password|su
su < password
both doesnt work.

Use the -s (silent) option for the read command.

Use "sudo" for that.
