If I had an application installed on a 32bit Red Hat , and now I want to put it on 64 bit Red Hat , I know that I have to recompile it ..., but is that stuff with ./configure - > make -> make install .. , is that stuff called recompiling ? If not , then how do I recompile it ? if I have the source ...
Yes that is the recompiling stuff. The compiler is gcc and the makefile is essentially just a file telling it what to do. The configure is a prestep many packages have to setup the makefile to be appropriate for your environment.
FYI: You may not have to recompile a 32 bit to run on a 64 bit - it will just run in 32 bit mode. Even in recompiling the directives its configure and makefile know about may leave it as a 32 bit executable.
