I am trying to use Kermit on a Debian Woody install to automate some tasks on a terminal connection.
Generally it is going okay, but...
What command should I be looking at to capture screen data?
The logging functions capture lots of extra escape commands.
The DOS version has screen capture commands not available on the version I have that are somewhat documented.
Should I be looking at Kermit or Bash commands?
It all depends on your interests and your needs. If you need to script serial communications under Linux, then Kermit is probably a very good choice (one of several good choices). If you need cross-platform scripted serial communications (for example, DOS and Linux), then kermit becomes even more attractive.
For capturing, consider a terminal emulator, such as KDE konsole, or GNU screen (technically not a terminal emulator, but can log screen data).
--- rod.
As a follow up in progress:
I have found that (using the kermit run command in a script) I can capture screen data from a tty with "cat /dev/vcsX". Of course this fails with my ttyS*. I can format the data with newlines and trim it but don't know how to make it work on the serial connections.
