Antialiasing weirdness

I have a programmed a very small OpenGL app. It uses only opengl and glu - glut isn't beeing used.
What I can see is a triangel spinning aroung itself. But If I do export __GL_FSAA_MODE=2 (I have a nvidia GeForce3), the triangel spins smoothly but veeery slow. I cannot imagine that it takes soo much resources to do antialiasing.
Does anybody have any idea what's happening?
