algorithm for sniffing IP packets?

Hello, Can anybody provide me with a simple algorithm for sniffing IP packets of a local network? I tried packet_C.c someone had recommended to me but it does not compiles up. I get a total of 198 errors which includes a 'ip_conv.c does' does not exists message. I am a newbie to linux programming please help..

shrike_912, do you need to do everything yourself or you can use libraries? If you can use libraries, take a look at 'libpcap'.
