Add an Icon to The System Tray

How can I add an icon to the system tray by a bash script or C++ program?

For example I had written a bash script which, checks whether the internet connection is available or not (for example by pinging a site); And if it is available I want to add an icon in the tray to indicate this; How can I do it?
I think X should have an interface for it...

And also how can I do it in C or C++ program? As I check QT toolkit doesn't have an interface for this;

this is nothing to do with X. it's down to the individual desktop manager, which will have sufficient bindings to do this.

I have found the answer; For example in KDE

"ksystraycmd" run a program and add an icon for it in the tray;
see "ksystraycmd --help-kde"
