access denied - but why?

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to run a script on my Suse 7.0:
it calls

VAL_ETH0=´cat /proc/net/dev | grep eth0 | awk ' { print $2} '´

and I get

/proc/net/dev - access denied

even though I am running the script as root

A script that just calls

cat /proc/net/dev | grep eth0 | ...

will work fine though.

What am I doing wrong here????

(The script is to shut down my computer when there's no traffic on the network)

For more info search for shutdown tool in forum networking...
