Which distro were you using? My Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS doesn't have these feature test macros defined. I'm wondering if there was a regression, or an update I'm missing.

To avoid any misunderstandings, I don't need to use a feature test macro like XOPEN* to get the PTHREAD_MUTEX_ERRORCHECK enum member. I only need to use _GNU_SOURCE to get the initializer for pthread_mutex_t.

I am currently using Ubuntu 10.10, but this worked on Arch Linux as well. But, I'm not sure if that's what you meant.

Ah, ok. _GNU_SOURCE is a special case macro - it means "I support all features"
