[SOLVED] [PHP] Why I can't run MiniGal 2? Why this error happens?

Hello,

I am trying to find a simple gallery PHP program, and MiniGal 2 (MG2) seems to be pretty much what I want.

From its page, http://minigal.dk/mg2.html, I have downloaded it inside a new folder "gal", in the HTML root of my server. After extracting it I tried "http://www.server.org/gal from a browser, as instructions suggest. I get a server or file not found error.

Calling the script from command line with PHP I see an error of unexpected EOF.

After this, I have manually checked all the file "{" and "(", changed some "==" with strings to "===", and I'm close to 100% that they should not be the problem now. Now I can run it from command line, and it outputs HTML code. But it still gives the not found error from a browser. :-/

I have attached my changed index.php file. Can you please point me an error either with my changed file or the original one? And this should probably need something changed or added in MG2 docs.

My server is working correctly. It is a Debian with PHP 5.6.14, Zend Engine v2.6.0 with Zend OPcache v7.0.6-dev (all of these from 'php --version')

I have run MG2 in a different machine and the original script works. So my changes did not change as much as I needed. How do I find what error is happening with PHP in that Debian (which is the machine I need to use) ?

As I said, there are other pages in this Debian, and they work.

Yes, I have short_open_tag Off (local) Off (master) and there were several other "<?" instead of "<?php" in other files.

But fixing them all didn't help. :-/ Let me recheck it...

( by the way, I used vim `find . -name '*.php'` )

You lost me with this. Why are you searching .php files?

What I meant was, if in you have "short_open_tag=Off" in the php config file for apache2 (/etc/php5/apach2/php.ini), the "<?" (a short open tag) is going to fail.

You need to set it to on.

Or change the line in index.php to "<?php".

hehe It's because I did not like the short tags, so I decided to change them instead of turning them on.

Right now I tried to see a diff between the two PHP infos... but it's not nice or helpful. Too many differences because or different orders, groups, and some lines are not present in both. I gave up around 20% scroll of ~1000 lines.

I'll turn it on (just locally, can't make it global on this machine) just to test as you suggest. But I guess it won't help.
Edit: do I have to change php.ini also in subfolders with included files?

I see. I don't like the short tags either.

In the mean time, I unzipped mg2.zip in my server directory. If I try to run it out of the box I get a 500 error and the same "unexpected eof" in error.log.

By changing line 236 in index.php to <?php the server serves the web page.

I have the same version of php as you.

That's strange because several files in the include dir have the short tag too, some of them more than one time. For the last post I downloaded it again, started from scratch... the results were "clean of me" - or so I supposed, hehe

By changing only the line 236 to "<?php" does not solve the issue. The error still there.

Now I'm feeling just too silly, too newbie. Look at this session:

I did a some searching on .user.ini and the posts that I found all point back to the php5 manual:

Somehow I managed to get it working. The sad news is that I'm not sure how. The changes I have tried to make in that short tag variable are not considered by the server (unfortunately).

I'll try to repeat the success and then I report in this thread what is the secret. Until there I will not mark it as solved - because that would frustrate another one with the same problem in the future, searching for a solution.

On the other hand, I'll contact the person who administrates this machine, about the Apache homework and that some PHP settings should be able to be changed for us. Comments on arguments to make this idea stronger are welcome (so I'll wait a few days to make my first try there).
