Show hidden files and folders in Mac OS X

Dear All,

I have been wondering how to show (or hide) hidden files and folders in Mac OS X, by means of Terminal or something like that. I wouldn't want a extra shareware app just to enable and disable file visibility.

Any ideas? Thanks,

Akiva
