.wmv mystery

Mepis 8 on an Athlon 2400XP with Radeon 7500.

The system was initially configured to use the "radeon" driver. Everything was fine until I tried to play a *.wmv file. There was sound, but only a blue screen (no video).

Just guessing, I used the Mepis X-windows assistant to switch to the fglrx driver. After re-booting, X would not start (could not find the fglrx module). I then edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf to send it back to radeon. After re-starting, everything is back to normal AND the *.wmv file now plays normally.

WTF??

All I can think of is that installing flgrx did something else---which I did not reverse when manually editing xorg.conf.

It may have loaded a module. do lsmod >modules-wmv.txt then reboot and see if it still works and do an lsmod >modules-nowmv.txt and run a diff.

It's possible that there was something resident in the video card which made it work also. Try power cycle if reboot allows them to still play.

So far, I've confirmed that my laptop with NVidia graphics is working correctly. Tonight I will check further on the home machine.

Thanks for the tip.

My guess is that .wmv files have a different default player which uses a different default video output driver than another one.

For example, suppose that a mpg files is played by xine, but a wmv file is played with mplayer. Mplayer can use different video output drivers (e.g. xv, gl, gl2, x11, ...).
Maybe the video output driver used doesn't work on your display. Changing the default for that player may also resolve the situation.

Some things may work on one but not the other. Full screen resizing will function in xv but in gl2, the video will be centered with a black background.
