Will Mepis be better for me?
I have Debian testing with Gnome on Pentium 3 667mhz with 128 MB Ram.
Will Mepis give any advantage? I use the computer for aMule and Bittorrent and learning the linux system better so that I'll be able to install on my main computer which I use for games, internet and sync. with a pocketpc. |
128 MB is going to be too little RAM for the KDE desktop. You could always, I supposed, install Mepis, then download the XFCE desktop and use that.

Thanks but is it better for me in some way?

If you really want to learn Linux stick with Debian. MEPIS and Ubuntu are both very easy to use.
It all depends on what you want to get out of a Linux system. Debian Sid is my main system with IceWM. It takes a lot of tweaking to keep it running ok. I also have Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS on a separate machine both are very simple and easy to use. Debian and Slackware are both great distros to learn how Linux works. The only way to get into the working any deeper would be LFS. Debian will give you everything you need in a Linux system. |
If you want to be productive and replace Windows, Mepis is the best distro. If you want to play around and not get much done, Gentoo and Slackware will give you hours of entertainment. IMHO computer OS's are tools. A tool should be unobtrusive and easy to use. The choice is yours. You can use your computer to work or you can work to use your computer. Mepis rules.

Those are great points Richard. I use Mepis 3.3 as my main operating
system. Everything works right " out of the box ". And it's just ONE cd, not 4, not 14, like all those bloatware distros that don't install or function as easy as Mepis does. Warren Woodford will lead Linux to the land of >10% desktop usage. |
Mepis is wonderful, but for 128 MB of RAM, it's super-slow. If you do use Mepis, be sure to use IceWM or XFCE instead of the default KDE desktop.
