Very very newbish question
 

I recently purchased a CD of SimplyMEPIS from Onward Go on ebay. It comes with extremely basic instructions, some of which assume I know more than I do.

Apparently this Linus system (plus applications) does not necessarily have to be installed. It can run off my CD-ROM. Currently I have Windows 2000 on my hard drive.

The first instruction is to try the SimplyMEPIS as a demo, to see how it looks and if it is missing any drivers.

The first instruction says: "at the KDE login used the username 'demo' and the password 'demo' again." This will boot MEPIS from the CD into the memory."

My very, very newbish question:

How do I get to the KDE login?

First go in to your BIOS and make the CD-ROM drive the first boot. Than save the changes and reboot with the Mepis CD in the drive. It will then ask you which kernel to use 2.4.x or 2.6.x. click on the 2.6.x. Now you will see some stuff scrolling down the screen, takes a while. Then when it asks for the username type, "demo", then do the same with the password. Then wait till it finishes booting.

The KDE login will come after the initial boot screen, after all the text goes flying up your screen. You will know because it will stop at that point and ask for the user name & password. At that point, either click on demo or type demo for user, and demo for password. It should finish booting, and you will be in your Linux desktop!

Okay, but how do I get into BIOS?

When I had Windows 98 I would start my computer and click F8 over and over again to get to the boot or format part.

Now that I have Windows 2000 I click F8 over and over again, but it's not like that anymore. Nothing like a password or user ID comes up.

It all depends on your computer. For example, on my computer, you hit Delete. I know on others F1 works. Sometimes Escape works. It all depends on your computer. Try different things.

right. Turn off your computer. Now, as it is booting, look at the screen- it should tell you something like "press delete to enter bios setup" press it. Reboot and try again.

Thank you, I figured it out! I changed my first boot to CDROM and got the Linux going. Saw the nice desktop and everything.

I have another problem now. It doesn't recognize my mouse, so I couldn't explore it. I don't have a PS/2 mouse, I have the old one. My computer doesn't have PS/2. Doesn't recognize my sound drivers. C-media.

Keyboard works fine. It's not PS/2 either though.

I think I saw something in the forums about a mouse not working. I'll go look for it.

When you boot up Mepis, it actually has kernel selection. 2.4 is marked as being for older hardware. Maybe you should try that?
