I used to use Suse upto version 10 and my scanner worked find. I upgraded to 10.1 and it would only work as root. I have other problems with Suse 10.1 and I am ditching it in favour of Mepis 6.0. I have everything installed everything is now working OK with the exception of my scanner.

sane-find-scanner identifies the scanner(Mustek Scanexpress 1200 UB)at libusb002:002 and a gt68xx driver. However scanimage -L hangs completely as if it cannot find any device. I have looked at /dev and there is no usbscanner device but there is an 002 device in dev/bus/usb. I tried to enter that device in scanimage -d but it rejected it.

I have amended the gt68xx.config file to identify my scanner and the appropiate pslfw.usb file is in /use/share/sane/gt68xx. Incidentally, I can't access it as root either.

So, now I am stuck. I seem to have tried eveything I know so hopefully somebody else may kow something I don't.

What happens if you use Kooka, Xsane or Gimp to scan?

Running either xsane, kooka or Gimp is the same as running scanimage or xscanimage, Nothing.

You can see it searching but eventually it give up and aborts. Running scanimage from the terminal
will carry on indefinately unless I shut down the terminal. I can't even find the pid number to kill it. I feel I have done everything and it should work. Incidentally, under system devices (usb) it is identified as connected.

Is it a permissions problem? My scanner is set up, default, so that it can only be used by a user belonging to group 'scanner'.

Also what's in the file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

I managed, accidently, to recreate the problem in the original post by overwriting dll.conf.

Symtoms were sane-find-scanner found the scanner whereas scanimage -L said it wasn't there! Fixed dll.conf and scanner back to normal. Spooky!!

Here is the fix for suse 10.1

Xsane "no devices found" error

For regular users to launch and use xsane, you'll want to change the permission settings on the device like this:

In console as root:

sane-find-scanner

i.e (Apply to your own output)

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x2220 [CanoScan], chip=LM9832/3) at libusb:003:008

"libusb:003:008" is what we are looking for...

Then go into /dev/bus/usb/003 and do: chmod a+w 008

This way when launching xsane, you won't recieve the error message of 'no devices found'

You may or may not have sorted this however if not ,
The sane configure file loads a default scanner .
You must comment out this default line before it will recognise your actual scanner.

What you suggest had been done already and did not function. Hence my workaround.
