updating mepis for newbie
Hello All,
When I update, is it wise to include "non-us" and "unstable" sites? Thanks! Mepis rocks!!! :D |
Below is my /etc/apt/sources.list and I've not had any problems with it.
-Al # Change sources only in the section at the end of this file! # Primary deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free # deb-src ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free # deb-src ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free # non-us deb ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/ testing/non-US main contrib non-free # deb-src ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/ testing/non-US main contrib non-free deb ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/ unstable/non-US main contrib non-free # deb-src ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/ unstable/non-US main contrib non-free # MEPIS apt pool - specific packages available on-line deb http://apt.mepis.org/3.3/ unstable main deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main # DO NOT EDIT ABOVE THIS LINE # mplayer |
Thanks Al, I will try your suggestion.

I personally use ONLY unstable and have not had a problem. But I think it's a matter of personal choice.

I've been doing apt-get upgrade (not dist) each Sunday for the past 4 months and have not had any problems. Coming from a couple of years of Mandrake and then Slackware, I LOVE the Debian method of updating. Solid. Easy. Just works.

I used Al's suggestion and so far everything is working fine

I use the smart upgrade from Synaptic without any problems. It's actually resolved some problems that I've had.

Debian's unstable branch has been exceptionally stable lately because of the forthcoming Sarge release but it will become much more unstable soon after the release. Using unstable will break your system from time to time and it is meant for experienced users who like to help by reporting bugs and who can fix their system when it breaks.
Unstable is not recommended for beginners or users who need to have a reliable system all the time. For these users Debian's testing branch is a much better choice, especially if they have installed the apt-listbugs utility that will warn before installing any packages with known bugs. It is much safer to run a testing system with a package or two pulled from unstable than going all unstable. |
MEPIS uses unstable by default, the testing repos are there for packages that dont exist under unstable

What is the difference between 'upgrade' and 'update'? James Oliver |
it shouldn't be any problem as long as you pin Nvidia drivers (if you have Nvidia) http://www.mepislovers-wiki.org/inde...nvidia_drivers
update = downloads the LIST of packages available on Debian servers (sycronize local DB with remote one) upgrade = downloads the PACKAGES and installs them |
