Renaming device icons

I have installed Mepis 3.3.1 on an ancient Celeron 433 - works great.

Mepis has created icons for devices and placed these on my desktop - these are for a CD reader and CD writer, amongst other devices. I want to rename these icons to something that I can readily understand, but the available 'rename' function that appears when right-clicking the drive does not effect a permanent change. Any clues please?

Renaming device icons

When you right click and open "Properties" you see the name assigned to the device icon. When you type in the new name leave a "space" before typing it in. If you don't type a "space" first it won't take the change. Don't ask me why.

Boy talk about a "hack," That's pretty clever if it works. If it doesn't you might want to check out "man tune2fs", perhaps especially the -L option.

I have the same weird behaviour in kde 3.5
Also here I wanted to call an icon /xfs and it renamed / to %3f (well, its ascii code)
Nice hint for the space :)

For me hal or kde doesn't take the label assigned by tune2fs.. I'll have to recheck

The 'space' hack won't work for me, but I've sorted out a workaround, maybe this will help others.....

On desktop, right click and select 'Create New'
Click 'Device'
Select device type (in this case CDROM)
On Device tab select the appropriate path to the device
On General tab you can rename to whatever makes you happy, and also select an icon of your choice.

Next step was to get rid of the original icons:

On desktop, right click and select 'Configure Desktop'
Select 'Behaviour', then Device Icons
Deselect to hide the appropriate icons....
