no web in hotels

Whenever I am in a hotel, I cannot get web access. I have tried both Firefox and Konqueror without success at a range of hotels, both those that charge for access and those that do not, both wireless and wired. I have XP installed as well (despite my signature) and it has no trouble, so I know the hardware is working fine.

I cannot find that anyone else has this problem, despite searching this site and using search engines. I would appreciate some guidance since I hate going back to my *legacy OS* for anything.

Thanks.

Please provide details about your network configuration. Do you need dhcp?

Do you mean that you can ping sites, resolve names, but can't use browsers?

It is set to use dhcp automatically, and I have never tried to ping (should have, huh?!), just use a browser.

Problem is, I forget until the next time I am in a hotel, so have never had the time to try to solve it. I always assumed it had something to do with the presence of a proxy server, but really didn't know.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Unlikely, since it worked in Windows.

Check that dhcp does all its job, and sets:
IP (check with ifconfig)
Netmask (check with ifconfig)
DNS server (/etc/resolv.conf) ***Likely problem here (check with cat /etc/resolv.conf)
Default gateway (check with route)

In the command line, type => ifconfig -a to see what is active.
If there is nothing, type => ifup -a to activate whatever you have

If they do have wifi, one thing that I noticed, is when I disable my wifi card from within Windoze, it will prevent the ifup from working on that card. It must be a hardware setting or something. Maybe you should try Windoze and enable everything. Then go into 'nix and ifup -a.
If that doesnt get you an IP address, then I am not too sure what would be an issue.
I can grab wifi from my local hotel.

Could be DNS server problem.

In your System/OS Center, go to networks and click "misc." Make sure that DNS is set to be acquired by DHCP, not static.

Also, it would be a good idea to stop all the interfaces except the one you want to connect on.

Also, (re)start Firefox/Mozilla after you've enabled the connection (sometimes it caches things you don't want cached).
