Networking two Mepis, version 7 and 6.5
 

I have two Mepis based machines and a XP on a LAN through a router. I cannot get the two Mepis machines to access each others files. They both see the each others workgroups and can access the XP machine. Have tried numerous setups with no success. The error I get on both machines when I select the workgroup is: "Timeout on server". Under file sharing I have tried simple sharing (Samba only) and advanced sharing (Samba and NFS) with no success.

Anyone here have an idea what I am missing/doing wrong? (Have searched many forums and except for some very geeky descriptions regarding Samba networking with XP/Vista have found nothing regarding my problem.)

Subscribing to remind myself to look at Mepis 8 (on an Inspiron 1100) at work next week.

Cancel that - Mepis is no more on that box.

I have the 32-bit RC 3 loaded on a AMD 2000 CPU test buggy this morning and suddendly i have access to all three of the Linux systems attached to the router...

I could not believe, never been able to share files before...

AMD 2000 Running 32-bit RC 3
AMD 4400 dual core running Mepis RC 2 updated
AMD 9500 Quad Running Mepis 7 without flash, otherwise fully updated.

I hooked an older windows XP into the system to check, and I can also see that system, and access the music & Photos from the shared folders...

This is all new for me...

I click on the Mepis symbol > Network Folder > Samba shares and the different systems are there...

I did nothing, as I never tried to fix anything it was never a high priorty for me... but this morning everything is working...

New update, have the problem solved. Took JR's approach and installed Mepis 8 (7.96 RC3) on the new machine and everything works as far as networking is concerned. (Takes a long time sometimes for the two Mepis systems to see each other after power up. These are home machines so I only use the desktop when I want to do something that takes some computing power.)

However, will have to look around on LQ as the Mepis 8 does not set the GForce 8500 to the correct resolution, so have a fuzzy display.

Thanks, JR, now I really feel bad! .... just kidding.

As an update, I now have the Mepis 7 able to read and write to the Mepis 6.5 and the XP, however neither the M6.5 or the XP can access the M7. (One problem was I had a typo in a workgroup name on the M7, that is when it started to talk to the M6.5 and XP.) Turned off the firewall and the M7, no change. Now wondering if reinstalling the Samba server on the M7 might be worth the effort. (The M6.5 and XP continue to talk to each other with no problems.)
