Netscape Navigator 9 desktop icon doesn't show properly

I've downloaded and installed Netscape Navigator 9 to my Mepis 8. Everything starts properly when I click on the desktop link. The problem I don't understand is--- why didn't the normal NN icon get placed on the desktop instead of the shell icon??

Is there a way to get the normal ".exe" icon to show instead of the shell type icon??

repo, Do you use MEPIS? -- MEPIS 8, like every MEPIS, or at least every MEPIS back to 2004.04, uses KDE & KDM.

Given that this is the MEPIS sub-forum, the regulars can be expected to know that there is only one WM in normal use.

I hope you were trying to be helpful; but your Q about "which window manager?" only served to remove OP's post from the 0-reply threads list prematurely.

My apologies if this sounds too harsh.

You can't install a different windowmanager in mepis?
I suggested a solution, so what's the problem?

You can, but who does? There was no indication in the OP that we are dealing w/ anything but a stock install.

Again, do you use MEPIS?

no
was my solution incorrect?

OOps!!!

Didn't mean to open a can of worms!!!

So, I'm guessing there isn't a way to get rid of the shell icon and replace the program link with the navigator icon....

Thanks anyway

my only question is
Why Netscape Navigator ?
AOL put that in it's grave ( RIP) a long time ago .

and not Firefox 3

rshafersr,
Left click on the menu button, lower left corner, menu will open up. Go to Internet and click on that, see if there is an entry for Netscape browser. If there is, click and hold on the icon to the left of the name and drag it to your desktop. A small window will open up and you will get the options to move here, link here, or copy here. Click on link here and that icon will be on your desktop.
Now if Netscape is not listed in the menu, you will need to right click on the menu button and the menu editor will come up. Click on file> new item> Internet. Name = Internet, Description= Netscape , Command=netscape. Next click on the button to the right of name, this is the generic icon button, it will open up a window with icons in it . Scroll down until you find the Netscape icon, click on it, and it will show up next to the name. When finished click on save and Netscape should then show up in the menu. Follow the directions above to drag and drop the icon to the desktop.
If you run into any questions in the menu editor click on help and a simple handbook will come up, it might be best to read that anyway to maybe explain things better than I have.
I hope this is what you are looking for.
Wayne

Normally I hate it when folks quote an entire previous post; but in this case I think we need to start over from the beginning.
  1. "Netscape Navigator 9" -- I'm way more interested in where you got it than why you choose to use it. Personally, I hate Navigator almost as much as I do IE; but what you like & use is your business not mine. "Why" is not necessary to solving your problem. OTOH, "where" may explain why you got no proper icon on your desktop; although even that is immaterial if we can solve your actual problem. (Note: there is no "Netscape" or "Navigator" package in the repos for MEPIS 7.)

  2. "downloaded and installed ... Mepis 8" -- this strongly implies a stock installation, probably recent. I will assume that is the case until the evidence proves me wrong.

  3. Stock MEPIS 8 means KDE 3.5.x -- My Mepis 8 is not available right now so I don't remember which release of KDE 3.5 you are using, but I don't think it matters. As long as you aren't using KDE 4, my MEPIS 7, w/ KDE 3.5.8 should provide the correct answer.

  4. "desktop link" -- Correct me if I'm wrong, but I take this to mean that there is an icon for NN on your desktop, & all you need to do is to change its appearance. No need to mess around in the Main Menu or w/ its editor.

  5. What to do:
    1. Right click the current icon for your NN link.
    2. Select (click) "Properties".
A "Properties for ..." dialog box should open.
    3. Select (click) the "General" tab if it didn't open by default.
    4. Click the icon in the dialog box just below the "General" tab.
A "Select Icon" dialog box should open.
    5. Type "netscape" in the "Search" box.
    6. Click the netscape icon.
You should be back at the original "Properties for ..." dialog box, but it should now display the netscape icon you just selected.
    7. Click "OK".
Your desktop link to NN should now look the way you want it to.
    8. This worked in MEPIS 7 -- I actually changed my Firefox icon to Netscape. Yes, there was a good Netscape icon available.

  6. 'normal ".exe" icon' -- I'm sure you know by now that there are no ".exe" files in Linux, so there are no ".exe" icons for them. Not that it matters, but did you start using Linux recently?
I hope this works for you, please post back to let us know what you & how it worked out.
My apologies for my part in delaying you getting a responsive answer.
