MEPIS with other windows managers? how do I...

So I love Mepis and its been a savior ever since I decided that SuSE is just too much upkeep. (still wanting kde 3.4 though) I am very familiar with KDE (as a GUI) but I want to try some other windows managers.

With Synaptic i found about a dozen. cool. But how do I log out of KDE to load up another one? I would love a graphical option to choose which I log in to, rather than trying it CLI stylee, but I guess both would be useful knowledge.

I remember back when I first started with Linux, not sure which DEs I was playing with, but most had an option to "close XX and start YY" or something. That seems to be gone from most of what I've seen.

Also, will the wonderful MEPIS OS Center be available under, say, FVWM or Blackbox?

Will SuperKaramba (once KDE3.4 is available for Debian) run in another DE/GUI so long as its dependencies are met?

First, install one or more lightweight window managers (like IceWM or fluxbox).

Second, log out of KDE. Choose "logout" rather than "shutdown" or "restart".

This will bring you to a graphical login screen.

Third, select the "menu" and choose your "session type". This will give several options, including "KDE" and whatever window manager you just installed (e.g. "IceWM" and "fluxbox").

Fourth, after choosing your desired session type, login.

Note that you can actually switch between different window managers without having to logout first. Your application windows will continue running, they'll just lose their window borders and gain new window borders as the new window manager takes over.

In contrast, a full desktop environment like KDE or GNOME can't be switched over just like that.

Don't forget to try xfce which is both great looking and great functioning on Mepis.

If you apt-get gnome 2.10 you will have that option also in "menu" when you loggout or end session. Good Luck, Woob
