Sorry. Guess I should have elaborated.

Mepis is best for anyone looking for an easy to install and use operating system apart from windows. I just have not found another linux distro that works as well as Mepis out of the box.

It may not be best for die-hard linux users who like a challenge.

You know, I've never tried Slackware. I just can't get excited about it. There must be something special about it with the large following it has.

If you really want a challenge, use Gentoo.

Yeah, I definitely think gentoo is the hardest distribution all-around, I used to use it from stage1, but broke it, and from experience, the best thing about it is the package manager, it's hard to keep updated, hard to install.

Mepis is one of the best distributions, I used it for almost a week , I really liked mepis.

Slackware is different, it requires a bit more configuring, but I think it's worth it.

After trying Vidalinux for a bit, I would have to pass on Gentoo.

I'm not into challenge. I want it all and I want it easy ... lol.

A distro(Mepis) that gives me nvidia drivers at the install has my full interest. Or distros which has nice scripts available for certain chores works for me too, like Kanotix.

I've got to be able to install my fave browser too. Opera.

Nvidia and Opera. That's all I ask for.

Sure would be nice if Opera would make a 64bit edition.

I have to agree with you there fair_is_fair.

Mepis and Kanotix detected all my hardware including a modem that Ubuntu and SUSE didn't.
AND
it is Debian based.

Once you get used to the concept of debian after coming from windoze, Mepis (and Kanotix) is just a joy to use and mess about with if you want. (eg. I use fluxbox not KDE)

Well said anticap.

I don't know what all the hoorah is about with Ubuntu. I had troubles with it too. Even the famous Knoppix gives me grief.
