mepis power down problem
 

using Mepis 3.3.2 test 03 installed to hard drive. when I log out and choose shut down computer through KDE kdm GUI not command line the system starts to shut down unmounts file systems then ends with power down.
never turning all the way off. I then have to hold down the power button untill it powers off. Very anoying this is only distro that does it on my box I have instaled Kanotix, Dam small, PClinux OS P.9 all shut down fine except Mepis, I have tried swithing to APM and ACPI and APM/ACPI in bios none seem to work any sugestions or fixes. Could not find any thing in search.

Specs:
Matsonic Motherboard with 1300Mz celoron
386 Mgs SD Ram (or close to it cant remember exact)
40G hd = Mepis Linux
10G hd = Win ME

It sounds to me like Mepis does not have acpi compiled into the default kernel. I have had the same issue on other distro's where recompiling the kernel with acpi support fixed the problem.

I have never compiled kernal before sound complicated but maybe is not ?
before I venture to lern how to do that would like to hear from other Mepis users if they have same problem and if there is easy fix.

Did you try kmenu>kdecomponents>defualt shutdoen option tick turn off computer hit apply then you should be good to go.

Cant find kdecomponents in kmenu, did you mean kmenu /control center/ kde componets/componet chooser
there is no power otion in there ? I am using KDE 3.4 not 3.3 is this why I cant find it.
in control center there is option power control but only has laptop battery as sub option.

Ah yes control center>kdecomponents>session manager. Sorry. At least it is there in my version.

I found the option in control center swithched it over to shut down and hit apply
did log out then shut down but did not work ended at power down promt again so I rebooted and tried once more thinking maybe full reboot was needed to set option but still stops at power down prompt. well at least we gave that the old college try !

any other suggestions. Anybody! Anybody !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are your power control options in the BIOS settings? Maybe something in Mepis hickups where the other distros ignore it.

Sorry couldn't post for little bit that darn thing called going to work got in my way!
Here are the setting in bios under power managment.

Power Managment/ APM/ACPI

Stand by Time Out Disabled
Suspend Time Out Disabled
Hot Key Power On Disabled
Onbord Lan Power On Disabled
Ring On Power On Disabled
RTC Alarm Power On Disabled

Power Managmet Can be changed to APM, ACPI. independantly or both together APM/ACPI
I have tried them all.

I am starting to think that rnicolson may be right and that I will have to learn how to compile the kernal with acpi support. Not that I mind learning somthing new It's just It seems I don't have the time to do the things I have to do let alone the fun stuff. It seems strange that Mepis would not have ACPI built in I seem to remeber seeing it at boot up when all the text is going by saying starting support for ACPI will have to look again .

It works fine for me on a bunch of computers, so either something wacky happened when it installed or it doesn't like your hardware for some reason. FWIW, I tried installing Mepis on a few E-Machines, and couldn't get anywhere. Knoppix and Kubuntu worked fine on them.

Maybe somthing I will just have to live with But it is a drag to have to sit there and wait till bootdown is done then hold button down untill shut off. On windows side and when I had other distros instaled just hit shut down and walked out of my office. i was kind of hoping someone else had same problem and was able to fix. Oh well I will keep looking in to it and by the way I check it out at boot up it does say loadind ACPI support then done and then later down the way it say APM daemon overiden by ACPI so I am pretty sure Mepis has it built into Kernal already. Anyway Bluesman233 I appreciate you trying to help me out

Ok solved the problem with a post at mepis lovers by cblue

Have to use the acpi=force in grub see below

Try editing your /boot/grub/menu.lst file and adding acpi=force to the kernel you boot into.

For example:
title MEPIS at hda3, kernel 2.6
kernel (hd0,2)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10 root=/dev/hda3 acpi=force nomce psmouse.proto=imps splash=verbose vga=791
initrd (hd0,2)/boot/initrd.splash

Works Great powers down now no problems ALL is Good

Hello, this trick also helped me shutting down a Debian 2.6.8 installation. Never had issues powering off using the 2.4.7 kernels though. Thanks.
