Mepis in Flux??

I used Mepis about 2 years ago and liked it. Since then I have been distro hopping. I checked Mepis again this week. WOW, things seem to be in disarray. Warnings about not upgrading software for the latest release and a new 6.2 alpha based on , GULP, ubuntu??

Does anyone have any insight on what is going on?

I've used Mepis for a while now, but nothing compares to the SimplyMEPIS 3.1 release. It was stable and always worked.

Since that time, Debian itself has been in flux in Testing (Etch) and Unstable (Sid) and nothing has been the same. Mepis is trying to keep on top of it, but thats difficult. It seems that I am reinstalling Mepis 3.4-3 waaay too often, usually due to trying to install one package which breaks many others in my install, or breaks my USB-drive access, or breaks my sound output, or something. I wish that I were better at administering these machines, but a reinstall takes a lot less time. It's nothing but a headache, and this isn't Mepis' fault, just the way Debian is rolling right now.

So Warren, the Mepis leader, wants to move to Ubuntu as his base, since the packages are stable every 6 months. While that is nice, it ends up excluding a huge number of packages that I find useful.

What to do? Right now, I just don't know. Watch the kAquarium eat your RAM, I guess.

The Kaquarium thing hopefully will go away in the next test release. I am using 6.0A with updates now and it works just fine. Like any distro, a distro is a collections of apps of the creators choosing with other personal touches thrown in. The package source is still Debian really, and the distro is still Mepis.

All in all, a very nice distro.

I haven't been able to break it....:tisk:

It's stable for me too and I tried very hard to break it. :D

Ubuntu bug is still there for me: laptop heating and can't restart cleanly! Needs manual reboot. But generally a dramatic performance difference. It is what one would expect from MEPIS after all!

i have been using simplymepis 6.0 beta 1 and have no problems with running dvds or playing music.if u want to stay with the debian testing and unstable then use kanotix.i dont really like ubuntu, but with mepis it seems to be better.

Or use Mepis 3.4.3.

I've had great response from all the versions of Mepis that I've ran. I do have to admit though, this new Mepis 6.0 beta 2 (even though it's Ubuntu based) runs a lot better. Warren has something here.
