mepis: does the repository public key matter?

When I do a synapric update, i get a message about the public key for
ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/

I've found how to fix it on that site, but my question is:

does the key really matter?

whats it do? (encryption I'd guess)

can i update/upgrade/install from that source without the key?

thanks!

It depends on you.

My understanding is that it's a lot like a website certificate--letting you know the authenticity of the source.

Yes, you can.

yeah i noticed that.

key or not, does the mepis repo mean another debian-based distro could install, for example, the MEPIS OS Center?

it could, I guess. though it relies on a very specific version of hwdata, so unless your running debian unstable your most likely going to have problems.
