MEPIS can't connect to the Internet.

After my OS Harddisk crashed yesterday, i transferred huge heaps of data here and there (on the Huge Data harddisk) and created space to install MEPIS as I needed to install an operating system as quick as possible.

I installed the SimplyMEPIS 3.3 and it simply can't connect to the Internet.

I got a copy of Puppy Linux quickly, and used it. Internet works damn fine there.

What is wrong with MEPIS?
I have used MEPIS many times before, and I am aware of the Bugs present in the MEPIS OS Center.

But even after takin' utmost care to get the Settings right, it simply can't connect to the Internet.

I can ping the Local Gateway fine, without any problem.

What should I do to get the Internet connection workin' in MEPIS, or I should simply give up?

So DHCP's a no-go?
Have you tried Mepis 3.3.1?
I found it had much better hotplugging capabilities than just 3.3. Perhaps its internet detection is better too?

If you have done everything through the OS center and all, then I would go with puppy or merely a different distro. I have used Mepis before, and it has handled my ethernet connection moderately well. My connection was on eth1, not eth0 like the OS expected so I had to go in and activate it myself (this was before my much simpler "ifconfig eth1 up" command now) but other than that its been great.

Well, mine too. But not this time.
MEPIS is quite moody.
I think that I should switch to Simply MEPIS 3.3.
Does it really have better stuff? I expect it to have less Bugs.

Moreover, i even tried lookin' at the configuration files, and all of them seemed to be Okay.
I still don't get why does MEPIS doesn't let me connect to the Internet.
I have also installed my ISP software many times now, but to no avail.

Checked resolv.conf, and everything is okay there!

Seems like it is time to switch to another distro.

Did you check your modem/ethernet settings as Mepis didnt connect to the internet for me until i told it which ethernet card to use. It was using eth0 instead of eth1, eth1 been my PCI ethernet card which the DSL modem was connected to.

Like what should I have done to check whether my PCI Etherned Card is detected as eth0 or not?
I checked ifconfig and it showed the proper settings applied.
Moreover, I could ping my Gateway fine with that.
Don't think that it was a eth0 or eth1 problem.
What do you say?

Usually, under all distros it is detected as eth0, and works fine.
What would have been wrong with MEPIS?

To get mine working, i selected the ethernet card i use to get online through the Mepis OS. Then i selected the correct card to 'start at system boot' and then i stared the port. All this was done on the Mepis OS.

Oh yeah.

That did not work for me though.

I have Cent OS (Clone of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux) installed on my computer which is working fine with the Internet and my Ethernet card at eth0.

MEPIS is moody.

Ya, i loved the CDLive version but my issue was when i tried to partition my drives and install, it would come back with errors at 13%. When i let Ubuntu create my partitions for me, it worked fine but i didnt like the partitions it made itself. Another issue i had was not been able to get past creating the user account. After entering all my details, it would ask again and again and agains and so on....

I'm a bit relieved to see other people having a problem with
getting Mepsi connected to the net.

I have a new dsl connection. My Windows drive works fine
but I've not been able to get Mepis OS Center to configure
my Mepis stuff. This is a separate drive-- might as well be
considered a separate machine and not dual boot.

Since this is an older thread, have you all solved the
problem now?

I have documented the steps I've taken with Mepis
OS Center here:

http://www.mepis.org/node/7427

There might be something simple I am missing. The Mepis
was set with kppp on dial up and that worked ok. So the
dsl is the sticking point.

What info and where do I put what's needed into the
OS Center?

Here's the hardware:

Tyan Trinity PII
384 sdram
Hard disk (various swapped in and out)
Linksys 10/100 EtherFast Lancard v. 5.1 (new)

The Lancard has a drivers disk which has one marked
"Linux" I have done nothing with that-- got no idea
where a lancard driver would be installed.

The OS Center consistently shows lo =down and eth0=down. I cannot get them up with the 'start button.

Will watch for replies.

Well, my problem is solved now.
Actually, I re-installed my favorite Cent OS back (when I suffered from a hard-disk crash, i wanted to install an OS as fast as possible, and the MEPIS CD was at hand, and so, i installed it.

I couldn't get the Internet to work on MEPIS, no matter what I do.
Moreover, I was using the MEPIS 3.3, which had some known bugs in the MEPIS OS Center.

Which version are you using?
