Hi everyone,

Any MEPIS users here have it installed on a laptop? It is difficult to find information related to both MEPIS and laptops, so I created this thread.

I am interested in hearing a summary of your experiences. Feel free to add your "MEPIS with laptop" knowledge and experience for us to share!

My hope is to keep this thread rolling so the MEPIS community can have a common place to discuss laptops!

I used Mepis on my HP ZD7000 about a year ago, it was (and still is) the only distro I've tried that actually get's the video (1680x1050) and wireless/WEP working correctly without any fuss (and I've tried quite a few). Simply amazing.

I just tried SLED10 on that laptop last night, had to fiddle with X to get the resolution right and I ran out of time/patience with the wireless... guess tonight I'll be putting the latest Mepis build back on.

Sorry but I don't understand: what is "SLED" Obviously a different distro. How does it compare to MEPIS from your experience (i.e., security, ease of use, compatibilty, etc)?

Also, is your HP ZD7000 Intel or AMD?

I am using Mepis 6 on a brand new (2 weeks) Compaq V5204NR. Everything works fine, although i had to edit a file and add one line to enable 1280x800 resolution. Wifi was a broadcom chipset, so ndiswrapper was needed. Graphics are onboard Intel, and was automatically configured, so i had 3D enabled right off the bat. Everything is working great. The only piece of hardware that is not working, to my knowledge, is the modem. It is a winmodem, so it needs the linuxant driver. I dont have a phone line, so its not a problem.. My internet is through fiberoptic.

yeah, SLED is another distro.. http://www.novell.com/products/desktop/

Personally, I think it's currently the most polished desktop version of linux available, but, it's not free (if you want updates.)

Anyone else reading this ever used (specifically) MEPIS 3.43 or MEPIS 6.XX on a laptop?

I use MEPIS 3.43 but might someday upgrade to MEPIS 6.XX

I do. I use MEPIS 6.X on an HP zx6000. AMD 64 3200+, 512M, 100G HD, ATI M200, Broadcom wireless. It's dual boot with XP Pro. No problems.

I use it on a Dell 700m with no difficulty, though the winmodem uses a Broadcom 43xx chipset so the driver had to be blacklisted--but that is in the Wiki!

Very impressed with Mepis on my IBM Thinkpad R50e (once the sound problem that's the subject of another thread was sorted out).

No problems with installation. Wireless worked straight off (though finding the place to set the WEP key could have been easier). Setting up the network printer was a breeze. Mepis integrates nicely with the special keys on the Thinkpad (e.g. the build-in volume buttons) and battery life seems fine.

I was also impressed with the way it dealt with my digital camera - other distros have had varying degrees of success in opening it up but Mepis is the best so far - detected it correctly and just opened up the right window in a "here are your photos" way with no messing about.

So a way to go yet, but so far everything I need to work does work, and as well or better than other distros I've tried.

I've tried it on a Dell Inspiron 1100, with no luck. The video was small and I couldn't get the wireless to work. But some of that might be me.

Any suggestions?

I have Mepis 6 installed as the sole OS on my Dell Latitude C600. I had a little difficulty setting up wireless but, apart from that, am very well pleased with Mepis and have no other problems that I did not create for myself.

Previously, I ran Mepis 3.4.3 on an IBM ThinkPad 600E dual booted with Windows 98 which worked quite well, too.

Right--if you do make the move, be sure to read the Wiki
on all Mepis 6 setup, including wireless.

I have MEPIS 6.0 on mij older laptop, lifetech, PIII 600Mhz, 192Mb ram. but I think about installing something lighter because if I open `OpenOffice` takes about 5 minutes to load.

I use AbiWord as my default word processor for that reason, only using OO when necessary.

This is not a MEPIS problem...

I'm running Mepis 3.4 on an old IBM-Think pad 390-e with 128mb mem and a Motorola(Broadcom) wireless 'G' card. Slow to boot but meets wife's needs for surfing and on-the-road e-mail use.
