Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I am trying to install Mepis 8 from the downloaded .iso into VirtualBox 2.2.2 on my PCLos system.
I create a 10 Gb virtual disk and let the Mepis installation do its thing for the partitioning.
I accept all defaults until I am asked if I want to install GRUB. Since this will be the only disk and installation visible to the virtual machine
I did not install GRUB. I left the Bootdisk (hda) and Use initrd checked even though they are greyed out.
After installation I tell the virtual machine to boot from hard disk, but
when I try to boot Mepis I get a message FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium ! System halted.
I have installations of XP and PCLos for VBox in my PCLos system and have
not come across this problem.
Can anyone advise ?
Should I install GRUB, even though the VBox .vdi file is the only hdd that
the VBox Mepis virtual machine can see ? If so, should I install to mbr
or root ?
The only difference between the Mepis installation and the XP or PCLos installations in VBox is this GRUB installation.
