Question MEPIS 7.0 and Synaptic

Hi all,

I use mepis 7.0

While looking at Synaptic --> Preferences I noticed several options:

1) always prefer highest version
2) always prefer installed version
3) always prefer version from: a) stable or b) mepis

I don't do much system updating and stability / reliability is my main concern. Should I select #3? If yes, then should I select "stable" or "mepis"?

I assume "stable" refers to the "stable" debian release but I don't know for sure.

Your input is appreciated and if you know of somewhere that I can learn more, then that would be great too!

Leave it on #1.

Mepis does not draw software from the "experimental" or "testing" repositories unless you add or allow these in repository settings.

#1 will give you up-to-date software that has already been deemed stable by Debian terms.

But, in my experience, its never a good idea to go crazy on major system updates unless you are experiencing difficulties.

It is normally safe and a good idea to update programs such as browsers, email, etc.

If it isn't broke don't fix it.
