Thanks!!!, for ALL you guys have DONE, for linux and the MEPIS PROJECT...

I have been wanting to get into Linux because I am tired of Windows...
I was afraid I would mess something up, and still might, HA HA. But with Mepis it is so easy to install that really blows my mind.. I figured it would take months, just to learn enough to get linux installed on my hard drive, not so with Mepis , I have learned a lot in the few weeks I have been at it, I currently have three versions of linux, Topoligilinux, Knoppix, and Mepis.. thanks to Mepis I will have more linux versions in the future.... I know, I don't have any Idea How MUCH WORK went into this distribution...(years in the making I'm sure) but I know, I can do my part by promoting Mepis, and helping people out with their problems, the more I learn the more I can help.. THANK YOU GUYS, FOR MAKING LINUX SIMPLE ENOUGH FOR A DUMMY LIKE ME....I HOPE one day to contribute my part to OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE :newbie: :study: :cool:

I second that! The Linux Community, both here on LQ and across the 'net, is fantastic. And the MEPIS OS is by far one of the best, if not *the* best, linux distributions out there. I applaud your work, oh Warren and Co. and the forum moderators, and I thank all of the forum people in general for the constant support available.

I couldn't agree more! Warren & crew and all those who maintain and support the various Mepis sites are to be highly commended!!!!!! Anything I'd say would be an understatement. Mepis is the only Linux [and I've tried every major distribution] that out of the box supports my int. modem, printer, usb memory cards, camera, cd-rw writers, etc., etc., etc. It's been running w/o any problems [solid as a rock] for over 2 years on a run-of-the-mill eMachine T2692 . :)

I've been going through distros left and right as of late and I've finally found one that is the fastest hands down i've used for my IBM t42 notebook and simple to use being that I'm not a guru, yet! Over the weekend I've loaded slackware 10.2, FC4, Suse 9.3, Ubuntu and then finally Mepis 3.3.2 test 3. I was surprised after loading Mepis with the speed alone and then when all the packages fired up real nice I was impressed. The response time is waaaaay less than when I use Fedora and the others. Support for MP3 and DVD/Codecs without any hassle was a nice addition to the distro. I am hooked and synaptic is making it even more fun. Thanks to Warren and all the others involved with this kick ass distro. I wonder if the 3.3.2 final will have kde 3.4? I will do some research on it.

Mepis 3.3.2 will not include KDE 3.4

Mepis 3.4 will be released one month after OpenOffice 2.0, KDE 3.4 and X.Org have been in Debian unstable for a month

As KDE and X.Org are already in unstable, we're waiting for Oo ....

Does this mean that we can update to KDE3.4 w/o the problems that have been abound?

Upgrading to KDE 3.4
 

I have now updated 3 PCs to KDE 3.4 in Mepis Linux with no problems. I just did (from debian unstable)
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install kdebase kdm
and took the default on all the choices ( retain current settings)
You can try the package maintainer's settings on kdm if you are adventurous, but I think it's best to retain your current ones on all choices.

The upgrade to KDE 3.4.2 will remove skype and a few other things you may want ... look thru the removed list (best to save a list of the removed packages in a text file before you accept the upgrade). You can get a .deb for skype from www.skype.com.


If you want X.org, just do

apt-get install xserver-xorg

and allow xorg to copy your settings from X11 to xorg.conf

If it doesn't work, there's a config utility (I think xorgconf at the shell, may be a little different), but it worked fine for me.

You can then look at the few packages that are kept back (around 20-30) ... it's safe to upgrade all but 4 or 5 of these ... just make sure not to remove anything you need.

There are threads on this at www.mepislovers.org .... but I think it's quite safe to upgrade to KDE 3.4.2 from debian unstable now ...
