icon separation no less than 1 inch

I've just installed SimplyMEPIS 3.4 and find that icons on the desktop cannot be placed closer than what appears to be 1 inch. If I move an icon closer to another one it is "repelled" when release the mouse button. I cannot find a setting to change this behaviour. It has not happened to me with other distros.

I'm not sure what could be causing your problems, but I'll take a wild guess. Right click on your desktop -> icons and make sure that "lock in place" is not ticked.

Not quite. But you got me to the right place. It's not "lock in place", I needed
to untick the "align to grid" box. thanx anyway!
