General questions about antiX
 

Casually i have found this small distro based on Mepis (while Mepis is based on Debian stable plus Mepis repository).

I'm curious to known the principale differences between:
Debian stable - antiX - Mepis

And also known what level of risk (about stability) became from using different repository and which potential issue you have found on antiX especially if you use it for certain type of use (for example developer).

Note:
I'm probably i would go on debian stable but i'm curious also i think could be an interesting solution even as small livecd adapt even on computer with few resources.

Well, Mepis is a KDE Distro made by Warren and friends.

AntiX is a Icewm and Fluxbox and Rox Pinboard Distro made by Anticapitalista and friends.

Antix is very tweakable. You can run KDE, XFCE, Gnome Desktops also if you wish running the meta package installer. Antix also is a very fast running distro. I prefer it to lets say Ubuntu for speed but has the debian repositories (lenny,squeeze,sid, depending on how your repositories are set up and how adventurous you are). Anticapitalistas motto fits real well for this distro

AntiX runs lighter applications than Mepis for certain tasks.Antix also has certain tools that are quite neat like sxmi script for updating kernel and packages besides the regular synaptic package manager.

Edit: Forgot to mention that quite a few Mepis users also use AntiX also. And Mepis motto is "It just Works"

I find useful different topic as for example one relative to the keyboard.
Now i have access problem on the forum.

I hope in future will be available the possibility of an install from cd while now there is necessary follow this procedure:

I have found interesting documentation on antiX and Mepis useful and almost identical from debian (the difference are very few) and i like it.

Now i used the base 8.2 on virtualbox, very nice, conky is already configured (while i have configured conky on archlinux and ubuntu but i must lost sometime). In summary there is attention on small details but that are useful.

Note:
rokytnji i have noted that you use almost only ligth environment and/or light distro are there some specific reason?
I use only Archlinux as light distro, but when i do my next big upgrade, except few exceptions i will go on light environment (icewm is my favourite window manager), because i don't want resource (ram).

Part of it is because of Speed of Desktop and Distro. Part of it is I am a self taught Linux User. So I learn by trying out new things. Also part of it is my equipment is older than some folks gear. I forced myself to learn Icewm,Fluxbox,JWM at first. Then found that configuring these light desktops got easier with use. Plus I learned about editing files and using root terminal. Also learned Rox Filer which was a great mystery to a biker like me. After becoming somewhat proficient at getting things to work the way I wish, It just became the prefered way to do things for me.
The knowledge transfered over into other parts of the Linux experience. So now I prefer Icewm,Fluxbox,and even Rox Pinboard with a Icewm Toolbar.


As far as stable vs testing. I figure it depends on your skill set on what you prefer to use, plus figure in the age of your equipment. I tried running the Liqourix 2.6.31 kernel using the smxi script. Found out my dated hardware prefered the 2.6.28 kernel instead. So for me it was a hardware limitation.

A lot of the regulars run some version of testing. There are Different repositories you can enable after install that are just commented out in sources.list . From Sidux (which Anti runs and keeps folks updated on what to look out for when upgrading) to Squeeze and Sid. You have control over this. Just up to you if you want to run the latest and greatest from Sidux. Squeeze is actually pretty stable right now.

A lot of the guys at the antix forum I refered you to are more knowledgeable than I am because thay have been using it since the beginning. One last note. Antix has the capabilty of being set up as a rolling release distro like Arch or Crux or Sidux.

I should also mention or suggest you join Antix Forum
even if you don't have it installed yet. The guys there are very friendly and Helpful. You don't get all the Drama like some new users get at the Debian Forums. The Guys at MepisLovers are very helpful and Friendly also. And are very knowledgeable to. It is not as impersonal (in my opinion only) as lets say Ubuntu Forums where your thread or post can become lost in the masses of threads that are posted each day. Like I said, Just my opinion.

On the MepisLovers forums, they have a subforum dedicated to AntiX too. Posting in either the Antix forums, or the ML Subforum will be equally as beneficial.

AntiX is my 2nd favorite Distro and I have never seen it fail, though I have seen a repeated issue with wireless throughput from the Live CD, which is easily remedied by changing from dhclient to dhcpcd in the wicd control panel
