File system check forced

I have noticed that Mepis stores somewhere a variable which increments each time a partition is mounted. ie.each boot. Mepis is not getting this right on my machine and I notice during boot up it will say hda2 mounted 72 times without check - check forced and off it will go into fsck of that partition

However the hda2 has probably only been mounted on boot 9 times really.

So the variable is being incremented something like 8 times each boot. Or so it seems

Does anyone know what process stores the number of mounts and where that file record is kept?

Records are kept in the partition itself, you can access values using "tune2fs". Process I don't know.
